The Prostate
The prostate produces the
fluid that gives the sperm energy to swim and is important for fertility
when we are young. The gland is the size of a walnut found just below the
bladder. The prostate wraps around a tube (the urethra) that carries urine
from the bladder through the tip of the penis.
Common prostate problems
-
Prostate Cancer. Affecting 50
percent of all men over 50 years old, Prostate Cancer is the most common
type of cancer in men and is the second highest cause of cancer deaths
in men. With early detection, the chance of recovery is high. A blood test
called a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) makes early detection possible
and is recommended annually for men 50 years old and over.
-
Enlarged Prostate. Or BPH (benign
prostatic hyperplasia) is an enlarged but otherwise normal prostate. An
enlarged prostate is common in older men but may cause problems such as
frequent urination, bleeding, urinary tract infections, or the inability
to completely empty your bladder. Though BPH is not cancer, it may require
treatment by a physician.
